A few weeks ago (I’m timely), CMU alum and Facebook Product Designer Lee Byron (ID ‘07) and hosted a hackathon (its a Facebook tradition), an event where a bunch of people get together and stay up all night making awesome stuff, either individually or in teams. The only prerequisite is that your project isn’t related to your “day job” and that whatever it is, it’s awesome. At the end, everyone presents their work over delicious takeout. It’s a great way to jumpstart ideas and cool side projects, as well as work with all the talented people around you.
This hackathon saw quite a few attendees from both inside the School of Design and out, and spawned some pretty cool projects. Here’s what popped up on the design side of things:
Coralrift, by CD senior Vivian Wang and ID seniors David Yen and Dane Pieri, was polished and is available to use. It’s a quick and easy tool that helps people host static webpages.
Alum Lee Byron and myself began redesigning and building a new version of Tartantrak, the university’s horrendous internal job engine, specific to the School of Design’s Confluence event.
Senior ID Allen Cai and Junior CD Frances Soong did lots of sketches and brainstorming for a conceptual model for an island. No image available for this one right now.
Finally, senior Kirsten Thulborn conceptualized a news service aimed at educating American youth about current events, and she made some wireframes to boot.
All in all it was a great event, and hopefully it’ll transform into a School of Design tradition and pop up again next year!

Another Confluence complete!

Congrats and great job everyone on this years Confluence! The recruitment session was capped off with HACKATHON, hosted by alum Lee Byron and senior Justin Edmund. A facebook company tradition, students were encouraged to simply create something they are passionate about by the end of the night.

Get some sleep everyone!

Eye Contact: Photos from this year’s Confluence

Yesterday, the McConomy Auditorium in the University Center was packed and buzzing with prospective employers and students exchanging business cards, swiping through portfolios and conducting interviews. Local design firms like ThoughtForm and MAYA were represented as well as global firms like frog design and IDEO. This year’s reception was held in the Palm Room at Phipps Conservatory, providing the beautiful backdrop to a hectic day for everyone.
